An estimate, not tax advice. Federal only: state tax is not included. It uses the 2026 IRS brackets, standard deduction and Social Security wage base, and assumes this business is your only income. It leaves out the qualified business income (QBI) deduction, so for many sole proprietors the real number is lower.

Questions

How is self-employment tax calculated?
Take 92.35% of your profit. Social Security is 12.4% of that, up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500. Medicare is 2.9% of all of it. If that 92.35% comes to less than $400, there is no self-employment tax.
Why is half of my self-employment tax subtracted?
The IRS lets you deduct half of your self-employment tax from your income before income tax is worked out. The calculator does that, then subtracts the 2026 standard deduction for your filing status.
Do I have to pay quarterly?
Generally yes, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year after withholding. Paying too little each quarter can mean an underpayment penalty, even if you pay everything in April.
Does this include state tax?
No. It is federal only. Most states with an income tax also expect estimated payments.
